The Characters Of Star Wars Rebels We Know Of So Far

This week we saw the official reveal of two of the main characters for Star Wars Rebels with Kanan and Ezra. But along with those reveals and with Toy Fair happening this weekend, we can probably expect to see more information and first looks at the other main characters of the show to be revealed soon.

There is an image that has come out recently for the Ghost LEGO set that showed four characters on the box of that set, but there is now a new picture of that same image from that box art that gives us a much better look at the characters, as well showing the two other characters who will be part of the crew of the Ghost, as well as confirm their names. Those characters being Zeb Orrellos and Hera Syndulla. These are the first two alien characters to be revealed as part of the main cast of characters for the show, and they do fit a previous description of them that was reported a few weeks ago.

Clone Wars fans will no doubt recognize the name Syndulla, as that was the same name as the Rebel freedom fighter on Ryloth named Cham Syndulla. Just what exactly the relationship is between Hera Syndulla and the rebel freedom fighter during the Clone Wars has yet to be revealed.

Zeb Orrellos looks to resemble the early Ralph Mcquarrie designs of Chewbacca, and is reported to be the trusty sidekick character of the series, much like Chewie was to Han in the original trilogy. But just who he plays the sidekick to exactly, is still a question to be answered.

    Rebels-Close-up-Legos

So now with that information, let’s do a rundown of all the characters that have been fully revealed, or that we know about so far:
    [blockquote cite=]

    The Inquisitor-

An agent of the Empire who is tasked by Darth Vader to hunt down the remaining Jedi.

    Chopper-

The Astromech droid for the crew of the Ghost, who will be more of a grumpy droid than R2 was.

    Kanan Jarrus-

A Jedi who has gone into hiding after the events of Order 66, and has forsaken the ways of the Jedi by keeping his past a secret.

    Ezra Bridger-

A kid who grew up a con-artist and is force sensitive, but doesn’t quite understand the power he has. He will be mentored by Kanan in the ways of the force.

    Hera Syndulla-

A Twi’lek who looks to have ties to Cham Syndulla of “The Clone Wars'”

    Zeb Orrellos-

The Sidekick who looks to fill the Chewbacca role of the group.

    [/blockquote]

So those are the six characters we know about so far, but we can be sure more reveals are on the way soon. In particular for  Zeb Orrellos and Hera Syndulla. While the four hero characters and Chopper look to be the main characters of the show, Greg Weisman did say in an interview with IGN this week that there will be a total of six characters that make up the group of Rebels for the series. He said, “We have a character who’s our focus character, and then five other characters that make up this group of six rebels.” So based off that quote, it looks like we can expect at least one more main character who has yet to be revealed by anyone.

Things are definitely picking up for Star Wars Rebels, and it’s really exciting! So make sure you keep it locked here at The Rebels Podcast for all latest news and updates about Star Wars Rebels!

    Ezra Bridger Officially Revealed!

For the second time in one week, another main character has been revealed for Star Wars Rebels! The character revealed today is Ezra Bridger, who we’ve only seen previously on the box of the Phantom LEGO set. TV Guide has the exclusive first reveal of Ezra, where not only was it announced that actor Taylor Gray will be providing the voice of the character, but also included some new information about the him from Dave Filoni, who reveals that Ezra will be Force sensitive, but doesn’t fully understand what it is. You can check out the new information about Ezra below, as well as a new behind the scenes video, and some new images:

    [blockquote cite=]

In Star Wars Rebels, fans will see the rise of the Rebellion through Ezra: a 14-year-old con artist who learns to fight for a greater good.

Growing up on his own in the age of the Empire, Ezra has had to rely on his wit and cunning to get by. As voice actor Taylor Gray explains, “He’s very street-smart, he’s a pickpocket, he’s a little thief. But he’s doing it all because he needs to survive.”

Executive producer Dave Filoni adds that Ezra is not a bad kid. Although he may enjoy stealing from the Empire, his behavior has been influenced by the world around him – a world that is under Imperial control.

But his hard life has also made his world smaller. “He doesn’t really trust anyone,” says Rayne Roberts, creative executive of Star Wars Rebels. “That’s kind of his motto in life. He has that hard edge at times.” When audiences first meet Ezra, he is not yet a Rebel and is not yet interested in restoring freedom to the galaxy – but that will soon change when Ezra is introduced to his new surrogate family: the crew of the Ghost.

Greg Weisman, executive producer, says, “His eyes get opened to the fact that there are people who care, who are trying to fight the good fight. And he becomes one of them.” Still, there is more to Ezra than even he knows.

Ezra is Force-sensitive, Filoni reveals, though he is unaware that he is tapping into this mystical energy field. Ezra knows he has some strange abilities, but they’re “instinctive and reactionary.” It is only through his relationship with Kanan, a Jedi Survivor and crew member of the Ghost, that Ezra will learn the true nature of his power. Together, they will forge new paths and destinies – and a rebellion will rise.

New Star Wars Rebels Action Figures and LEGO Info

We previously got a look at some of the new Star Wars Rebels LEGO sets last week, but with the New York Toy Fair taking place this weekend, some more info about these sets, as well as the Rebels “Saga Legends” action figures line, are getting revealed, and USA Today has some new info and images, including the first look at the Kanan figure. Here are those new images:

    1392328512000-75053-front-CMYK

    1392328320000-75048-front-CMYK

While we have previously seen the boxes for these LEGO sets before, you’ll notice that Kanan is no longer blacked out on the box for the Ghost, so we now get to see what he looks like in LEGO form. But it’s also revealed that for the Phantom, it will not only come with a figure of Ezra Bridger, but it will also include Chopper.

For the “Saga Legends” line of 3¼-inch figures, Kanan is the only new figure revealed so far, joining the Inquisitor and Chopper.

Stay tuned for more information about the Star Wars Rebels toy line as new information and images get revealed at this weekend’s Toy Fair!

New Clip From The Lost Missions Featuring Yoda

To go along with the announcement of “The Lost Missions” on Netflix, USA Today also has a great new article and clip that features Yoda and another well known Star Wars character! You can check out the awesome new clip and some more details about the arc from Dave Filoni below, but beware of spoilers if you do not want know anything about this arc.

    [blockquote cite=]

“The Lost Missions,” the 13-episode sixth season that’s coming to Netflix will deal with Ahsoka’s emotional exit from the Jedi order, which needs any and all Jedi and their lightsabers to deal with the growing threat of the evil Sith Lords and their apprentices.

One of the story arcs stars fan-favorite Jedi master Yoda (Tom Kane) and digs into what the Jedi believed about the nature of the Force during the time of the Clone Wars, how it worked and their relationship to its mysterious power.

Yoda will also be visited by the spirit of Qui-Gon Jinn, played by Liam Neeson in a reprisal of his Episode I — The Phantom Menace movie character.

“Without giving too much away, on one level you wonder why when Obi-Wan gets killed in (the original Star Wars film), he’s the one who vanishes,” Filoni said. “And then we see Yoda vanish when he dies (in Return of the Jedi). And yet in the prequels, none of the Jedi do that — why is that?”

Having Yoda be the star of the story is a departure from other tales in the overall Clone Wars saga, which featured new characters as well as those from the movies.

“We were always very careful about what we did with Yoda,” said Filoni, an executive producer on the upcoming Star Wars Rebels animated series. “We never wanted to overuse him or put him in too many situations just because we had him, but we really felt that we finally had a story and a reason for him to be in it that was good enough to warrant bringing the little guy out.”

That’s some pretty awesome stuff! The Yoda arc looks to cap off the series in an amazing way! “The Lost Missions” hit Netflix on March 7th

Greg Weisman Talks Star Wars Rebels With IGN

Star Wars Rebels executive producer Greg Weisman recently had a chance to talk with IGN’s Eric Goldman about the series, where he discusses numerous topics such as his first experience going to Skywalker Ranch, working with Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg and Pablo Hidalgo, the responsibility of bringing Star Wars to a new generation, the characters and tone of the show, and about the series having an end game. Here is a portion of the interview:

[blockquote cite=]Weisman said, of his experience on Rebels, “Most of it’s just been fantastic. I’ve got a couple of tremendous producing partners in Simon Kinberg and Dave Filoni — two incredibly great guys that are really wonderful to work with. Then, just from a personality standpoint, there’s no doubt of the three of us, I’m the crankiest. I’m the curmudgeon of the three of us. But they are just joys to work with, so incredibly talented. Then we’ve got — I’m not allowed to say who — a terrific writing staff on this show. We’ve got a phenomenal cast on this show — I’m also not allowed to say who! — but I know the names are going to be revealed very soon, just not yet.”

Describing the approach to Rebels and the widespread potential audience, Weisman said, “We’re all very dedicated, and we know this show is going to be canon, so we take that responsibility very seriously. We know that on the one hand there’s an audience who’s going to be watching this that knows everything there is to know about Lucasfilm canon and knows beyond that tons of stuff from the Expanded Universe, which may or may not turn out to be canon once Lucasfilm decides what is official and what’s not. So we want the show to work for that group, the most extreme fanboys out there. At the same time, we also have the responsibility that for a certain generation of kids, this is going to be their first exposure to Star Wars. By the time this comes out next fall, their kids were young enough that they won’t have seen Clone Wars. Forget the movies, they won’t have seen Clone Wars! So this will be the first Star Wars thing they’re seeing, and we take that responsibility very seriously as well.”

Weisman also noted that Rebels has a bit of a ticking clock element to its storyline. “Most of the series I’ve worked on are very much open-ended. There is no end to Gargoyles, there’s no end to Young Justice. Those shows may not get picked up, and I don’t own these properties, so I may have to stop working on them at various points. But there actually is an endgame to Star Wars Rebels, because this is about a finite period of time between Episodes III and IV. It starts about 14 and a half years after the end of Episode III and about four or five years before Episode IV. This is about how the Rebel Alliance came to be. So once the Rebel Alliance is, that’s pretty much where the show ends. I don’t know how many seasons that is. It’s not like we’ve nailed that down like, ‘Oh, we’re going to exactly X amount of seasons.’ But if all goes well, that’s the goal: we go from the origins of the Rebel Alliance to the point where the Rebel Alliance is, which would lead in essence directly into A New Hope. That’s the goal, to fill in that gap between those four or five years.”[/blockquote]

When reading the full interview, it’s clear that Greg Weisman and the rest of the Star Wars Rebels crew are really excited about the series and telling new Star Wars stories set in this time period that will show the formation of the Rebellion that we saw in Episodes IV-VI.

Star Wars Rebels Begins A New Direction For The Star Wars Universe

To go along with the announcement of the new character Kanan, USAToday.com also has a great new article up about how Star Wars Rebels marks the beginning of a new direction for the Star Wars franchise, and how it looks to put a strong focus on character and humanity. The article features quotes from Freddie Prinze Jr, Dave Filoni and Simon Kinberg talking about the series and it’s characters, as well as Star Wars in general. You can check out a portion of the article below:

[blockquote cite=]That first movie opened with Darth Vader on a mission to crush the fledgling Rebel Alliance. Rebels will show why the Empire comes after them as hard as they do while having the good guys employ guerrilla tactics vs. shady arms dealers, war lords, intergalactic Mafioso and an army of Imperial Stormtroopers.

“In the original movie, you see a bunch of guys in orange jumpsuits running around and not know who they are,” says Freddie Prinze Jr., who voices Kanan. “This is the start of it: the sacrifices that those orange jumpsuits made and the families those orange jumpsuits lost and the hatred that you would have for somebody who would literally kill your wife and child because they wanted your property.”

As Abrams’ movie gets closer, Filoni feels a lot of eyes in pop culture watching everything happening in the Star Wars universe after the Disney/Lucasfilm merger. And while there have been some changes, he says, “we’re still telling very strong stories and using our beloved characters in ways that are very true to them.”

“The tone will shift from story to story, and from movie to show to game, but what’s consistent is a reverence and love for the underlying material and a real passion for expanding the world,” Kinberg says.[/blockquote]

Star Wars Rebels keeps sounding better and better the more we learn about it, and I can’t wait to see the new stories we’re going to get not only for Rebels, but in all future Star Wars projects.

New Character Revealed! Kanan The Cowboy Jedi!

(Update: Lucasfilm has sent us a better quality version of the video, as well as some new info and images of Kanan)

The first main hero character for Star Wars Rebels has just been revealed, and it is a former Jedi named Kanan, who will be voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr. USAToday.com has the exclusive first look at the character, including a brand new behind the scenes video with Dave Filoni and crew, as well as Freddie Prinze Jr talking about the new character. You can check out the video below.

[blockquote cite=]Not every guardian of peace and justice was lost to the tragedy of Order 66. Introducing Kanan, a survivor of the Emperor’s Jedi purge and one of the main characters of Star Wars Rebels.

Kanan, voiced by Freddie Prinze, Jr., is a less traditional Force-wielder than fans are used to seeing. He carries a blaster, is a little sarcastic, and keeps his past a secret. “I like to call Kanan ‘the cowboy Jedi,'” says executive producer Dave Filoni. As shown in this video, his Jedi robes are long gone, replaced with armor and a holster, though a samurai-like ponytail hints at his Jedi Knight origins.

In Star Wars Rebels, set between Episode III and IV, Kanan has been underground for years, evading the Empire. If the Imperials become aware of his existence “he’s going to get killed,” says art director Kilian Plunkett. He still has his lightsaber, but no longer uses it for fear of revealing his true identity — and has ultimately forsaken the ways of the Jedi Order.

Star Wars Rebels will show Kanan’s journey as he rediscovers himself, just as a rebellion begins to form against the Empire. According to Filoni, “He’s a gunslinger that needs to put the gun away and pick up the sword again, and fight for noble causes and selfless causes.” But what will happen when he chooses to reignite his Jedi weapon, fighting once again for a greater purpose?

The video closes with a tease of what’s to come: an encounter with the nightmarish Inquisitor, the Empire’s Jedi hunter.

It’s great to finally get a look at one of the show’s main hero characters, and the fact that he is a former Jedi who survived Order 66 has me real excited to see Kanan’s journey throughout the series!
