Star Wars Rebels Updates From Star Wars Insider #147

Star Wars Insider #147 is starting to hit mailboxes for subscribers, and in it’s new column for Star Wars Rebels called “Frontline Update,” we got some new updates to where the series is currently at in production right now from Line Producer Athena Portillo. I just received my issue today, and thought I would share those updates:
    [blockquote cite=””]

-They are currently halfway through completion on season one scripts.

-They have voice recorded five episodes so far.

-Storyboarding is currently being done on three episodes.

-Two episodes are currently being animated.

-They are currently lighting their first episode.

-Sound designing for effects are being done, and a main theme for the show has been composed.
    [/blockquote]

Well it sounds like production for the show is moving along nicely, and I personally can’t wait to hear the new theme song for the show! Stay tuned for more updates on Star Wars Rebels as they become available, right here at the Rebels Podcast!

A New Image Of The Inquisitor From Entertainment Weekly

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly has a spotlight on Star Wars Rebels for it’s Fall 2014 TV preview, and while there is no new information revealed, we did get a cool new image of the Inquisitor and some Stormtroopers.

    inquisitor-stormtroopers_1500x854

You’ll notice the hilt of his lightsaber is a bit different from the previous images we’ve seen of him, where there were two handles on both sides of the hilt to form a round shape, but in this image there is only one. Pablo Hidalgo spoke about this by saying, “It’ll make sense once you see it in action.” So I guess we’ll just have to wait and see to what the Inquisitor is fully capable of with his lightsaber until we see him in action for the first time.

Dave Filoni Talks About The New Darth Maul Comic Series

With the announcement of the new Darth Maul comic series from Dark Horse that would be taken from a finished “Clone Wars” script about Darth Maul, there has been some confusion as to whether this story was intended to be the series finale, or just the final story for Darth Maul in “The Clone Wars.” While we gotten some quotes from Pablo Hidalgo and other employees from Lucasfilm saying this story was not the series finale, Dave Filoni has take to his Facebook page to set the matter straight once and for all as to what this story was intended to be. Here is what he had to say on his Facebook page:
    [blockquote cite=]
Before we get into the details about the Maul comic, I’d like to make clear that this storyline does not represent The Clone Wars series finale. I’ve seen some confusion about that online and want to set the record straight. There are additional Clone Wars episodes on the way and one arc in particular marks the series finale in my mind. We’ll have fun discussing that in the not too distant future.

Allow me to reveal in more detail what the story “Darth Maul, Son of Dathomir” is, and where it came from. As I have mentioned in previous interviews, for us to create the rich and incredibly complex stories that we were telling during The Clone Wars, we would be working on around fifty episodes at one time. This is from rough outline form, all the way through final sound design and picture lock. There were several stories that had gone through a substantial amount of development when the series was ended. We realized that this meant certain character arcs would go unfinished, but the Story and Publishing teams at Lucasfilm approached me with a unique way to continue Maul’s story for everyone who had been faithful to the show. The idea was to tell the story in comic book form, and knowing the great work that Dark Horse had done over the years, I thought it was an excellent plan.

The story of Darth Maul had become an important one for the series and it was only fitting that we chose him for a comic adaptation. The comics will be based on four finished scripts that were written for Season 6 . These scripts came out of one of our story conferences with George Lucas. As they moved through the production pipeline, they became finalized scripts with a great deal of the actual design work completed. The designs you will see, the plot lines, and character development in these comic books are all coming directly from the TV production. I turned over all of the art to Dark Horse so they could create an accurate representation of what we were planning for the show.

    [/blockquote]

So there you have it. “Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir” was never intended to be the series finale of “The Clone Wars.” Thought Dave did say it was written for season 6, which lets us know that not all episodes of that season got very far into production when the series was cancelled. But I am really anxious to see the arc from the “Bonus Content” that Dave mentions will mark the series finale in his mind, which I can’t help but think will be the Yoda arc.

It was great of Dave take some time out of his busy schedule to clear this whole thing up, so make sure you check out his full post about this over at his Facebook Page.

Darth Maul’s Final Clone Wars Story Will Be Told In A New Comic Series

(Update: While the article at Newsarama states that this story was supposed to be the final episodes of the series, Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo says in a tweet that this story was just a final 4-part arc for Darth Maul. Not the series finale)

While we are all still severely disappointed with the cancellation of Clone Wars last year, a bit of good news got announced today, as we now know that we will at least be able to read what the final story arc for Darth Maul was gonna be, in a new comic mini-series by Dark Horse titled, Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir. It will adapt the screenplays for what would have been a new Darth Maul centric arc that didn’t get produced, and will be released this May. Newsarama broke the news exclusively today, and also posted an interview with the writer of the comic series, Jeremy Barlow. Here is a portion of the interview:

[blockquote cite=]Newsarama: This is a story that many fans, including myself, thought we’d never see. What can you tell us about this upcoming comic miniseries?

Jeremy Barlow: Due to the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV show’s sudden cancelation, Lucasfilm wasn’t able to film the final episodes of the series, which is a shame because the story is an important — and action-packed — chapter in Darth Maul’s continuing evolution as envisioned by George Lucas.

Never ones to let a good story slip away, Dark Horse and the team at Lucasfilm saw an opportunity to save these teleplays from obsolescence and we’re adapting them into a four-part miniseries called Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir.

Newsarama: Although there are many fans of the Star Wars: The Clone Warsshow, I know some of the people reading this weren’t able to get up to speed on them. For those coming in fresh, how would you explain the set-up leading into this miniseries?

Jeremy Barlow: We’re making these as new-reader-friendly as possible, understanding that some folks will be coming to this series without prior knowledge of the television show. All you need to know is that Darth Maul has returned, that he’s really pissed off, and that his former master Darth Sidious is determined to put him back in the ground, permanently.

Beyond that, Maul now serves a Dathomir Witch named Mother Talzin and together they’ve raised a ragtag army of hired soldiers and criminals, causing all kinds of trouble for Sidious’ plans for galactic conquest. There have been victories and losses for both sides, and as we come into Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir, Sidious has captured Maul and stashed him away on a remote prison planet made of obsidian. How cool is that?[/blockquote]

    Clone-Wars-Darth-Maul

I for one am pretty excited about this. Sure I would’ve loved to see Darth Maul’s final arc completed as full episodes of The Clone Wars, but we know that was never going to happen unfortunately, so I’m just glad we will at least be able to read about the Darth Maul story that George Lucas and Dave Filoni had planned. Along with this new comic series and the Bonus Content episodes still to come this year, there’s still a lot to look forward to with the Clone Wars.

Kilian Plunkett’s Concept Art For The Ghost

Fans of The Clone Wars will recognize the name Kilian Plunkett as the lead character designer of that series, and who is now bringing his talents over to Star Wars Rebels. Well today the official Star Wars Tumblr page gave us a small treat, as it has posted a new image of one of Kilian Plunkett’s concept drawings for the shows main new ship, the Ghost.

Star Wars Comics & Graphic Novels Head Back To Marvel In 2015

When it was announced that Disney had acquired Lucasfilm back in 2012, it seemed like it would be only a matter of time until the Star Wars license would head back to Marvel Comics when it came time to publish future comic stories set in a galaxy far, far away, and today it became official, as it has just been announced that starting in 2015, Marvel comics will once again be the publisher of Star Wars comics. Here is the official press release about this announcement:
    [blockquote cite=””]

DISNEY’S LUCASFILM AND MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT JOIN FORCES TO PUBLISH STAR WARS COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS

Jedi, Sith, and the rest of the Star Wars Universe Come to Marvel Comics in 2015

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (January 3, 2014) – The Walt Disney Company’s Lucasfilm Ltd. and Marvel Entertainment are joining forces to bring new Star Wars adventures to readers across the galaxy, with Marvel granted exclusive rights to create and publish Star Wars comics and graphic novels beginning in 2015.

The agreement marks a homecoming for the Star Wars comic books. Marvel Comics published the first Star Wars comic book, Star Wars #1, in March 1977, which went on to sell more than 1 million copies. Marvel Comics published its Star Wars series for nine years. In 1991, Dark Horse Comics took over the license, publishing fan-favorite titles like Dark Empire and Star Wars: Legacy. Last year, Dark Horse released The Star Wars #1, an adaptation of George Lucas’ original rough-draft screenplay for the film, garnering rave reviews and national media attention and ranking among the top-selling Star Wars comics of all time.

“Dark Horse Comics published exceptional Star Wars comics for over 20 years, and we will always be grateful for their enormous contributions to the mythos, and the terrific partnership that we had,” said Carol Roeder, director of Lucasfilm franchise publishing, Disney Publishing Worldwide.  “In 2015, the cosmic adventures of Luke, Han, Leia and Chewbacca will make the lightspeed jump back to Marvel, to begin a new age of adventures within the Star Wars universe.”

“We here at Marvel could not be more excited to continue the publication of Star Wars comic books and graphic novels,” said Marvel Worldwide Publisher and President, Dan Buckley. The perennial brand of Star Wars is one of the most iconic in entertainment history and we are honored to have the opportunity to bring our creative talent pool to continue, and expand Star Wars into galaxies far, far away.”

“We’re incredibly excited by this next chapter in the Star Wars saga,” said Andrew B. Sugerman, executive vice president of Disney Publishing Worldwide. “Bringing together the iconic Lucasfilm and Marvel brands to tell new stories will allow us to continue to thrill lovers of the original Star Wars comic books and entertain generations to come.”

Marvel has continued to push comic book publishing forward with innovations and experiments like motion comics and digital-only releases, in addition to its deep, ongoing catalog of monthly series and graphic novels created by some of the industry’s most gifted artists and writers.

When it comes to Star Wars comics, all I’ve known were the comics published by Dark Horse for the last 20 years, and they have published some great Star Wars stories during that time. But as someone who grew up reading Marvel comics and continues to read them today, I’m definitely excited to see what brand new Star Wars stories we’re going to be getting in 2015 by Marvel!
