Dave Filoni Discusses The Lost Missions Episodes In A New Interview

With “The Clone Wars” hitting Netflix today, Entertainment Weekly has put up a new interview with Dave Filoni where he talks about some of the arcs in the “Lost Missions” episodes, as well as his reaction to when the series got cancelled, and how there may be some way to see those unfinished stories of the series. You can check out a portion of the interview below:
    [blockquote cite=]

How did the final batch end up on Netflix as opposed to a Disney-owned network?
Filoni: I wouldn’t be aware of specifics around the decision. As a creative, it gives Clone Wars its own place in its own room. We’ve shifted to a whole new regime here, we’re shifting to new story content. I love the place Clone Wars has on Netflix; it’s very accessible and I think its great. Could it have played on a Disney Channel of some sort? I’m sure it could have. But we’re making an exciting new vision that I think fits our new relationship and it has forged a relationship with Disney that we’ve excited about. I think everything has found its proper home.

So does the show have an ending? Or is 13 where the production basically stopped?
Filoni: One of the reasons I was okay with us ending when we did and production shifting from Clone Wars to Rebels is I liked the idea of having this Yoda arc available to us because I felt like this was a great place to have an ending if it’s going to end. There’s been so many threads throughout the five seasons, if you were to try and wrap them all up each one would be its own big episode. Here we have two story acts within this the 13 that have a strong connection to the franchise, they’re very important to understanding the overall saga. They’re [creator George Lucas’] last statement about Yoda and The Force and how things fit together. If you’re a die-hard fan, they’re absolutely must-watch story content. As I think fans realized, this wasn’t just fun storytelling in the Star Wars universe. These were very much George Lucas’ stories and he felt they were as important as his other work.

Vanessa Marshall Talks About Playing Hera In A New Interview

The first full length interview with a voice actor from Star Wars Rebels has come out today, and it is with voice actress Vanessa Marshall who is playing Hera Syndulla. Newsarama conducted the interview with her, and she goes on to talk about how excited she is to be playing Hera, her role with the group of rebels in the series, and how she is the first Twi’lek to have a staring role in Star Wars outside of the EU. You can check out a portion of the interview below:
    [blockquote cite=]

Newsarama: Vanessa, let’s jump right in – tell me what makes playing Hera Syndulla exciting to you!

Vanessa Marshall: First of all, let me just say, it is an honor to be a part of the Star Wars universe. But I also really admire her leadership qualities – her integrity and her passion for the Rebel cause. It motivates me to stand up for my own convictions in my daily life!

She truly walks the walk. She puts her life on the line, and comes through for her crew consistently. She’s sort of the getaway driver, if you will. What I love is that her bravery is just quietly noble.

Oh, and one more thing – I love that she’s a pilot! My dad is actually a pilot, and I enjoy flying with him in his open cockpit biplane. He does aerobatics and I just pretend like we’re on the Millennium Falcon. (laughs) So this is – I don’t have my pilot’s license, so this is an opportunity for me to unleash my inner pilot. It’s a ton of fun.

Newsarama: It was interesting to see in her intro video that she’s described as the commander of the Ghost. I found that interesting, since Kanan was presented as the leader of this team; is Hera going to be sharing those duties?

Vanessa Marshall: Well, like I said, she’s the getaway driver. She owns the Ghost, it’s her machine, so in that sense, she runs the ship. Kanan is the leader, 100%, and he has to be, but as far as the nuts and bolts, keeping the characters emotionally grounded and connected and on point, Hera is a leader in that capacity. But yeah, Kanan, as a leader, as a Jedi, he’s the man!

Newsarama: Something you brought up as well, that she is a Twi’lek. They’re in and out of the Star Wars universe a bit, but Hera is the first Twi’lek to take a true starring role outside of the expanded universe of comics and novels. Is the fact that there’s not as much known about that race something that will come up, or is her alien nature not much of a focus, is she just another alien that’s a part of the crew?

Vanessa Marshall: Well, perhaps it’s an opportunity to, I dunno, come clean on a few things – I’ve had friends ask me “why does she have legs coming out of her head?” I say, “Um, those are Lekku – brain tails – they’re advanced organs for communication and cognitive functions – those are not legs.”

Then they’ll ask me, “wait, are you the one who dances for Jabba?”

Look. While many Twi’leks have been enslaved, Hera is not a dancer. She is an ace pilot, a supreme fighter, perhaps approaching the Twi’lek Jedi Master Aayla Secura, who fought in the first battle of Geonosis, as we know. Obviously, Hera’s not a Jedi, but you see that Twi’leks have the capacity to fight, and fight very well. So she’s in that category.

So yes, it may shed more light on the diversity of the Twi’lek community. But I don’t think there’s a focus on her alien nature so much, not only because all the characters are equally antagonized by the Empire regardless of their race, but also because the Ghost crew really creates a cohesive family – one that truly transcends any and all racial distinctions. I think race becomes irrelevant. So while it will elucidate some things, it will also equalize others, and unite us all in the fight against the Empire!

    [/blockquote]

You can tell Vanessa Marshall is really excited about playing Hera, and about Star Wars Rebels in general. And she definitely knows her Star Wars history!

Be sure to check out the full interview over at Newsarama.

Here’s The Clone Wars: The Lost Missions Trailer!

We’re just 11 days away from “The Clone Wars” hitting Netflix, but today the wait just got a little longer, as a new trailer for those episodes has just been released over at IGN, and it looks amazing! You can check  it out in the video below:

These episodes look incredible, there’s no other way to put. Clips from all the arcs from the “Lost Missions” were included in this trailer, and they look to match the description of the trailer that was shown in Poland a few months earlier. Again, the Yoda arc stands out for me in this trailer. Seeing Yoda on Dagobah, was enough to give me goosebumps, but seeing what else Yoda is going to have to go through just from this trailer looks to be some  of the best Star Wars we’re going to see.

March 7th can’t get here fast enough!

    Hera Is Officially Revealed!

(Update: You can now see Hera’s reveal video here, as well as some new images and info about her sent to us from Lucasfilm!)

It’s been great getting introduced to all the main characters of Star Wars Rebels over the two weeks, but today the final main character has been officially revealed, and it is finally our introduction to Hera the Twi’lek, the captain of the Ghost! Entertainment Weekly had the officially reveal this time, where it was announced that actress Vanessa Marshall will providing the voice of the Hera, and like all the other character reveals, there’s a new behind the scenes video to introduce us to the character. Below is the Hera’s reveal video, as well as some words from the production crew and Vanessa Marshall about what kind of character she will be amongst the crew of the Ghost:

    [blockquote cite=]

Star Wars Rebels: Meet Hera, the Pilot

Hera is the heart of the Ghost crew from Star Wars Rebels. The Twi’lek is an ace pilot, able fighter, and is revealed to fans in this behind-the-scenes video featuring creator interviews, character sketches, and animation previews.

Hera is voiced by Vanessa Marshall, and is an especially gifted pilot. “I think she really makes flying the Ghost look easy,” says Joel Aron, CG supervisor. And while she’s strong-willed, Hera also keeps the group together, and can be warm and nurturing. “She knows how to talk to them to get the best out of themselves and to be part of that team,” Aron says. “That to me is the commander of a ship.”

Hera wears “utilitarian flight gear,” orange in color, with her Twi’lek head-tails hanging down her back. She’s not particularly glamorous, and is just focused on getting the job done. Like every member of the Ghost team, she has her reasons for rebelling against the Empire. Uncovering those reasons will be part of the Star Wars Rebels story, says executive producer Dave Filoni.

“Every time we get a script,” says Marshall, “I am breathless with anticipation. I cannot wait to read what’s next because I want to see where we’re going, too.

After seeing the video, I did find it interesting that no one referred  to her as Hera Syndulla. Perhaps they still want to keep her back story and possible connection to Cham Syndulla a surprise. But Hera looks to be another great character for Star Wars Rebels, and now that we finally know the whole group of main characters of the series, I’m looking forward to seeing them all interact with each other when the show premieres later this year!

Sabine And Hera Action Figures To Revealed At This Year’s SDCC

We got our first look at the Star Wars Rebels action figures this past weekend at Toy Fair 2014, but one things many fans noticed was that there were no figures or announcement about the show’s two female leads, Sabine and Hera, while other previously unannounced characters were on display. Well today Hasbro has confirmed to Newsarama that 3.75-inch figures for both Sabine and Hera are on the way, and that they will be fully unveiled at this years San Diego Com Con in July.

It’s a good thing Hasbro decided to finally confirm that figures for both characters are coming, as it was becoming a concern amongst fans that Hasbro wasn’t even going to have figures for the show’s two female characters,  and were only concerned about marketing the show to just the male audience, which would’ve been a big mistake. But thankfully that’s not the case, and we’ll be able to get our first look at the Sabin and Hera action figures this summer.

The Mandalorian Sabine Is Officially Revealed!

(Update: Lucasfilm has sent us some new images and info on Sabine)

Another Star Wars Rebels character gets an official reveal, and this time it’s finally one of the show’s female leads. The Mandalorian Sabine! The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive first look of the character, where they reveal that she will be played by actress Tiya Sircar. We also learn that Sabine is an actual Mandalorian who is a weapons expert, and is somewhat of an artist with her graffiti. You can check out the reveal video below, as well as some more info about the character from Dave Filoni and his crew. When watching the video, see if you can spot some Clone Wars Easter eggs!

    [blockquote cite=]

    Meet Sabine, the Explosive Artist

Sabine is a key member of the Ghost crew in Star Wars Rebels. As seen in this special video, featuring early design concepts, animation tests, and final art, Sabine is unlike any Star Wars character – especially in her love for blowing things up and tagging her work with graffiti.

Dave Filoni, executive producer of the animated series, discloses that Sabine is a Mandalorian. She has a great understanding of weapons and combat like few others, and has turned against the Empire. “She is spunky, she’s feisty, she’s got a little bit of attitude,” says actress Tiya Sircar, who is voicing the character. Additionally, Sabine is an artist, which is reflected in her hair, personalized armor, and graffiti calling cards. After the Ghost crew hits the Empire, Sabine makes sure the Empire knows who did it. Concept artist Amy Beth Christenson says that the Star Wars Rebels animation team has created a library of graffiti tags for Sabine, and is constantly adding to it.

As Joel Aron, CG supervisor of lighting and FX, says, “She’s adding something that we haven’t really seen before in the Star Wars universe. You have a character that is expressively creative through art — whether it’s the color of her hair or what she’s done to her armor.”

In the end, Sabine is a strong, no-nonsense heroine. As Sircar says, “I think she’s kind of an inspiration.”

Sabine was a mystery when we first saw an image of a female Mandalorian a few days ago at Toy Fair, but now after this reveal video, and while we still don’t know her whole story, she looks to be another great new character for Star Wars Rebels that I can’t wait to see more of!
