It is a dark time in the galaxy, as the evil Galactic Empire tightens its grip of power from world to world. As the series begins, Imperial forces have occupied a remote planet, ruling with an iron fist and ruining the lives of its people. The clever and motley crew of the starship Ghost is amongst a select few who are brave enough to stand against the Empire. Together, this ragtag group will face threatening new villains, encounter colorful adversaries, embark on thrilling adventures and become heroes with the power to ignite a rebellion.

Scheduled to premiere in the fall as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

It’s been a great couple of days for Star Wars news, and now we have another cool thing to look forward to this week with the new “Star Wars Rebels” trailer!

Dave Filoni Talks Star Wars Rebels In A New Interview From WonderCon

WonderCon may have been last week, but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped getting “Star Wars Rebels” content from the event, as IGN just posted a new interview with Dave Filoni from last week’s WonderCon convention. In this interview, Dave talks about telling new Star Wars stories set in an era that’s close to “A New Hope,” the 6 main heroes of the show, and discusses some of the early fan skepticism about the show’s tone. Here’s a portion of the interview:
    [blockquote cite=]

IGN: What can you say about the conception of Rebels? I’m guessing the general era was decided upon, but how did you then hone in on five years before A New Hope?

Dave Filoni: Yeah, that all came out of the discussions initially between Simon Kinberg and I and the story team up at Lucasfilm. You’re trying to find real estate now and not affect things. I think we’re very aware of the Luke Skywalker timeline and how we don’t want to cross over with that in any way. There are things that are the big pillars that we don’t to interrupt. I’ve always believed the best thing to do is kind of find your own spot and develop that and make new, exciting characters that people can believe in. I’ve had a lot of experience with that. Even Ahsoka’s kind of now being put up on the Star Wars pantheon by many fans, and Captain Rex. I think arguably they’re the most exciting parts of Clone Wars other than, you know, Anakin got great development, but I think you remember that period for the iconic characters in it. So we really wanted to create new characters for Star Wars and not use any that we had known before. It’s kind of a bold move given the big changes that the public sees, but we felt it was a necessary thing to say, “Hey, these are Star Wars characters. They’re in the world you know.” Five years seemed like a good place in time. There are all kinds of clues and hints within the movies, frankly, that people, if they’re really savvy and pay attention, would know are the same things that Simon and I kind of hit, that we go, “Well, that’s an interesting thing they’re saying. So we can’t do that. This affects us.” It’s really forged how the rebels themselves are active in this time period — in ways that I’m not sure the fans would realize.

IGN: Let’s start with the duo — or it looks to be a duo in some respects — of Kanan and Ezra. Obviously, the inclusion of a Jedi is notable given the era this show takes place in. You are once again, of course, going to have years of people going, “What happens to Kanan?”

Dave Filoni: Yes, you’re right! I’m so used to it now, though, because people are still asking me about what happened to Ahsoka. People don’t seem satisfied with the characters ending unless they die, you know? Which is kind of morbid. Yeah, Kanan is a great character to me because I’ve always wondered what happened to Jedi in this time period. Did they just go quietly into the night? Did any of them survive Order 66? How many of them survived Order 66? What were their experiences like? So with Kanan, it was a real chance to sit down and see the aftermath of the events of the Clone Wars. It’s all particularly topical for me, because I just spent the last eight years fighting the Clone Wars. So now to be dealing with a bunch of characters who are dealing with the repercussions of that era, it’s really kind of fascinating. When I look at Kanan, I could pretty quickly guess who he is and where he was. Always with Jedi you start to want to go, “Well, how can we make this guy different?” I think what people will find, I hope, is that he’s a different kind of mentor than Obi-Wan was. I really liked when we showed the difference between a Luminara-raised Padawan versus an Anakin Skywalker-raised Padawan. I think it’s important that not every Jedi teaches the same. They don’t all perfectly know all the lessons. I think that Freddie [Prinze Jr.] does a brilliant job at bringing Kanan to life as far as, what does he know about the Force? How did Order 66, these things, affect him? How did he survive it? All those things are great questions. So there’s so much to do just with him. You have all these characters too, but Kanan in particular — we even wanted his design, his armor, it kind of speaks to a bygone era. That’s something I really like about this time period. It speaks to something big that preceded it. To a kid like Ezra, he doesn’t really know anything about it. Ezra knows there was a Clone War, but he certainly didn’t watch the series. He had no idea it was on!

It’s always a good read when Dave Filoni talks Star Wars, and this discussion is no exception. So make sure you check out the full interview over at IGN.

Greg Weisman Briefly Talks Star Wars Rebels In A New Interview

Friend of the site Andy Behbakht, who is the host of the The Flash Podcast, recently had the chance to do an interview with “Star Wars Rebels” executive producer Greg Weisman on his latest episode, and while the discussion mainly focused on Greg’s previous show “Young Justice,” he did briefly share some small information on “Star Wars Rebels” as well. Below is what Greg had to say about “Star Wars Rebels” in the interview:
    [blockquote cite=]

Andy Behbakht – “You are doing this little project – it’s like the first time someone has ever done this before – , Star Wars Rebels, this tiny little project at something called Disney! How has that been becoming part of that world that isn’t just Disney but also Star Wars as an executive producer and writer for that show, right?”

Greg Weisman -“Yeah, I have written a few of the episodes and I’m executive producer, one of three executive producers on Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni and Simon Kinberg and beyond that, I’m allowed to say very little.

The series is set between episode III and episode VI, a little closer to episode VI: A New Hope of the movies. We are very excited about it and I think it’s really a show that is going to kick ass. Obviously a few of the characters, the leads have all been revealed and one of our villains and stuff but I’m just flat out not allowed to talk about it.

[Regarding a Star Wars Rebels panel at San Diego Comic-Con] I’m sure there will be something at San Diego, I’m not privy to what exactly their plans are, but I’m sure they are going to have some presence at San Diego and through the summer.

The show premieres in the fall, I know I’m allowed to say that so. It won’t be too long before people are seeing the show and sort of decide for themselves, but I think the stuff is looking great, great people on the show, in particular Dave Filoni and you know, talented artists, great writers, I think the show is phenomenal. “

    [/blockquote]

So while understandably no new information was revealed about the series, it was good to hear from Greg that it looks like there will be more stuff revealed about “Star Wars Rebels” at San Diego Comic Con this summer, which is really the first we’ve heard of the show having a presence there.

Thanks goes out to Andy Behbakht for allowing us to share this portion of the interview, and if you were a fan of “Young Justice,” be sure to check out the full interview with Greg Weisman over at The Flash Podcast.

Star Wars: A New Dawn Announced As The First Novel In The New Cannon

With today’s news about the EU from StarWars.com, it was also announced that the first novel to be set in the new Star Wars cannon going forward will be based off  of Star Wars Rebels. Well now we have a title for that novel, as well as an image of the cover.

    BmFWcumCYAA_Y6h.jpg large

The book will be titled “Star Wars: A New Dawn,” and will be written by John Jackson Miller, with input  from Star Wars Rebels executive producers Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and Greg Weisman. Star Wars: A New Dawn will be a prequel to the series, and is said to give “insight into a key character’s backstory.” Going by the cover, it’s probably safe to say that “key character” will be either Kanan or Hera.

“Star Wars: A New Dawn” is scheduled to be released on September 2nd of this year, and is a book to definitely be excited about. Not only will it be a great lead in to the series, but it’s the first in a new era of Star Wars novels, and is being written by John Jackson Miller, who did a great job with the “Kenobi” novel from last year.

Star Wars Rebels WonderCon Panel Recap

Today was the “Behind the Scenes of Star Wars Rebels” panel at WonderCon that featured Dave Filoni, Vanessa Marshall, art director Kilian Plunkett, and later music composer Kevin Kiner. Some pretty cool stuff was shown and revealed there, and while you can check out the new clip with Hera here, and the new behind the scenes video with Kevin Kiner here, below is a recap of some of the other highlights from the panel, with some new info revealed by Dave Filoni and Killian Plunket:
    [blockquote cite=]

-Star Wars Rebels will have a more uniform look than the Clone Wars did.

    – A lot of different species were considered for Hera and Sabine. Including Zabraks, Ithorians, and Togrutas.

-In regards to Disney now owning Lucasfilm Dave Filoni had this to say: “ I want everyone to know that Star Wars is still in the same hands it’s always been.”

-Killian Plunkett said there will be more space battles in Rebels than Clone Wars.

-The series will focus on the same core characters, and Hera will be in every episode of Season 1.

-The animation style will be more “animated” looking, and less life like than The Clone Wars.

-On the feel visually for Rebels, Killian Plunkett says, “Clone Wars tended to be very somber and dark. This is much happier, pop-ier stuff that still fit in very much with the established language of Star Wars.”

On the tone of Rebels, Dave Filoni says, “We want to give you the most authentic Star Wars as you’ve come to expect.”

-We’ll hear about Coruscant in Rebels, though we will not see it.  But there will be“Plenty of cool Imperial destinations.”

-And at the end of the panel a family of Cosplayers dressed as the crew of the Ghost appeared on stage, where Dave Filoni said, “Already? Uh… Hope you enjoy the show.”

    [/blockquote]

With every new panel, info, clip and behind the scenes video we get for “Star Wars Rebels,” the series just keeps looking better and better, and I  just can’t wait for the series to premier this fall!

New Star Wars Rebels Video Featuring Music Composer Kevin Kiner!

It was announced today at Wondercon during the Star Wars Rebels panel that Kevin Kiner (The music composer for The Clone Wars) would back to score the music for Star Wars Rebels, and now you can check out a new behind the scenes video with Kevin Kiner, where he talks about his excitement to continue scoring new Star Wars music, how he’s going about writing new music for the series, and even gives us a sneak peak at some that new music, which in my opinion sounds awesome!
