We’ve known about the episode “Breaking Ranks” for awhile now, but the episode that has caught my interest the most from this batch is “Empire Day.” Is it a holiday being enforced by the Empire? Or will it just be an episode that will focus heavily on the Empire? We’ll find out soon enough, but I am intrigued!

Kanan: The Last Padawan Comic Announced At NYCC 2014

While we got a little peek inside Kanan’s back story as a Jedi in “A New Dawn,” we’re about to learn a lot more about his past with the just announced “Star Wars Rebels” tie-in comic, “Star Wars- Kanan: The Last Padawan”!

This new ongoing title from Marvel was announced today at the New York Comic Con during the “Cup O’ Joe Panel” with Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, and will be written by “Star Wars Rebels” season 1 Executive Producer Greg Weisman, with art by Pepe Larraz. The book will release in April 2015, and is set to tell the story of Kanan as a young Padawan, where we’ll we see him survive Order 66, and be on the run from the Empire.

Marvel.com has posted an interview with Greg Weisman where he talks about the new book, and you can check out a portion of it below:

Marvel.com: How will STAR WARS – KANAN: THE LAST PADAWAN’s look into our hero’s past most impact his present?

Greg Weisman: Well, it’s more about informing his present rather than impacting it. But I think when you get this back story, you’ll see—especially as the television series continues into the recently announced season two—that it has a clear influence on his actions.  Beyond that: NO SPOILERS.

Marvel.com: What kind of tone are you using here, in terms of the Clone Wars timeframe of impending doom for all the Jedi?

Greg Weisman: The tone is slightly darker than the television series because it covers an extremely dark time. But from my point of view, nothing has changed, and the tone I’m always going for is that of Episodes IV and V.

Marvel.com: What will we see are Kanan’s greatest needs in terms of training? And what’s his relationship like with his master, Depa Billaba?

Greg Weisman: We’ll see Kanan train to be a Jedi. And then we’ll see him train specifically not to be a Jedi anymore. His relationship with Master Billaba is warm and wry.

While there have been questions as to why Greg Weisman will not be working on the second season of “Star Wars Rebels,” his involvement with “Kanan: The Last Padawan” is probably a contributing factor as to why that is. But it’s great that he’s still going to be involved with writing stories for one of the characters he helped develop for the series, which will no doubt be great for us fans to learn more about Kanan’s past, and in turn give more depth to the character as we watch him in the series. This is one new “Star Wars” comic I cant wait to get my hands on!

Darth Vader To Officially Appear In Star Wars Rebels Voiced By James Earl Jones!

There have been reports earlier this week saying that ABC would be airing the “Star Wars Rebels” premiere movie “Spark of Rebellion” with an extra scene featuring Darth Vader in the near future. Well now that report has been confirmed, as StarWars.com has announced that ABC will indeed be airing “Spark of Rebellion” on October 26th featuring an extra with Darth Vader, and voiced by none other than James Earl Jones! Here is the official announcement from StarWars.com:
    [blockquote cite=]

The critically-acclaimed epic adventure Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion will air on ABC on Sunday, October 26 (7:00 p.m. ET/PT). Executive producer Dave Filoni states, “We wanted to do something special for the ABC broadcast. We’ve added a scene which gives audiences insight into the Inquisitor and includes a cameo by Darth Vader voiced by the distinguished actor James Earl Jones.”

As if “Spark of Rebellion” wasn’t great enough to watch again, this extra scene with Darth Vader will no doubt make the re-airing on ABC a must watch for sure, and the fact that James Earl Jones is reprising his iconic role is just icing on an already sweet cake!

Be sure not to miss “Spark of Rebellion” when it airs again Sunday October 26th, on ABC.

Part Three Of Simon Kinberg’s Interview At StarWars.Com

The final installment of Simon Kinberg’s interview over at StarWars.com is now up where he talks about a variety of topics, including how they use the Force in the series, action sequences, and how “Star Wars Rebels” embraces all aspect of “Star Wars.” You can check out a portion of the interview below:
    [blockquote cite=]

StarWars.com: What is your approach to the Force? It seems more in line with the original movies, where it’s a little more subtle and there aren’t massive displays of power.

Simon Kinberg: I think that the way we use the Force [Laughs], let’s say, is reminiscent of the original trilogy. I think it’s a moment in time where there’s been a great disturbance, and Force wielders are either being hunted or, to some extent, are hunting. It’s not a peaceful time. So, there is an impact on the world on the distribution of the Force. And then we certainly wanted, for Ezra especially, since the show is being told through his eyes, to show a very organic evolution into discovering one’s Force abilities, and then developing them.

StarWars.com: The last Star Wars we had, which was the prequels and The Clone Wars, were much larger in scale. And Rebels really does make the action much more grounded.

Simon Kinberg: Well, that’s the story we’re telling. The story of Revenge of the Sith was a much bigger story. Ours is in the title. It’s the spark, it’s the origin, of the Rebel Alliance. The movement is grass-roots. It doesn’t have the same amount of resources. It really is just a few Minutemen starting what will eventually become the American Revolution. But you’re with this equivalent of farmers who are building an army; you’re not on the other side of having built the army. And that’s a big difference between the last prequel and the show, is that the stories we’re telling are just different. We’re not in full-scale war in Rebels, we’re not even in a full-scale rebellion. We’re at the very beginnings of just four or five people trying to spark more, help some people, and make a tiny dent in the Empire.

StarWars.com: One thing I noticed is that the show embraces all of Star Wars. The stated goal has been to channel the spirit of A New Hope, but there are obvious references to things that happened in The Clone Wars and the prequels.

Simon Kinberg: I think you’re right. From the beginning, the thing that we knew first was that it was going to take place between the prequels and the original trilogy. Once you make that decision, you’re on a timeline that has to reference both. It has to be informed by the prequels and it has to feed into the original trilogy. So, while it maybe leans more toward the original trilogy in tone and feel and look, which makes sense as it’s closer to the original films on the timeline and it’s really about the beginning of the Rebellion, Dave Filoni and a lot of the writing staff are folks who worked on Clone Wars and worked really closely with George [Lucas] for the last 10 years. So, the prequels were a really big part of their vocabulary, and so it is something that we absolutely connect with and reference on the show, and we’re always conscious of how stories we’re telling or characters we’re introducing link backwards and forwards. Because so much of our audience will be a younger audience, for some of them it’s the first time they’ve experienced Star Wars, for many of them, their most resonant experience was with the prequels. So, we wouldn’t want to ignore any of that.
